Dagoba - Roseberry 60

The bars are nicely packaged in a paper-lined gold foil that makes drive-by snacking easy. Slight imperfections are noticeable and the color is a medium-dark brown pointing to the fact that aesthetics are not a focus for this maker. The bar is smaller than many at 2.0 oz, and is laid out in such a way that separating a piece is not easy. The shape is that of a modified Kit-Kat bar, and it makes getting a taste into your mouth a multi-step process.

The aroma of this Roseberry is an upfront raspberry scent with maybe a hint of rose. This bar is very brittle most likely due to the inclusion of real dried raspberries. The flavors start out with peaches and citrus, mellowing into coffee and then berry. The chocolate melts relatively quickly and you will find yourself left with a tongue-full of seeds and bits or rosehip to chew up. Some will enjoy this texture dichotomy, others will not. The flavor is definitely fruity and the texture is a combination of smooth chocolate and dried fruit bits.

This bar is unique and very different from the traditional chocolate ?artificial raspberry flavor combination. Priced at $1.25/oz. it is a reasonable value for an organic chocolate, and will be most appreciated by those who are looking for something a little unusual.

Maker Notes:
Our signature dark chocolate blended with Oregon dried raspberries and bits of rosehips for an uplifting sensation. Nominated for Best New Product in the 2003 NASFT best product awards.

Dagoba - Organic Dark 59%

The bars are nicely packaged in a paper-lined gold foil that makes drive-by snacking easy. Slight imperfections are noticeable and the color is a medium-dark brown pointing to the fact that aesthetics are not a focus for this maker. The bar is smaller than many at 2.0 oz, and is laid out in such a way that separating a piece is not easy. The shape is that of a modified Kit-Kat bar, and it makes getting a taste into your mouth a multi-step process. The aroma is an upfront chocolate smell with hints of coffee and orange.

The chocolate is slightly brittle and does crumble a bit when you bite into it. As the chocolate begins to melt, the upfront flavors of herbs and fresh earth transition into traces of cherry and honey. The melt is nice with a good velvety feeling in the mouth, though the flavor fades more quickly than it should. The sweetness is well balanced, particularly for a bar with no vanilla added, and the flavors flow from one to the other nicely as the chocolate melts.

This bar is probably good for people who prefer their chocolate less sweet, and is a superb sample of organic chocolate. Priced at $1.25/oz. it is a worthwhile purchase, particularly if you are partial to in organic foods.

Maker Comments:
A rich and full bodied rustic grown organic dark chocolate bar, 59% cocoa, for chocoholics who like dark with a bit more sweetness than found in New Moon, Kosher Dairy, KSA
